Lovers Point Pier gets $750,000 from the Coastal Conservancy toward its $1.5 million repair
The century-old pier, damaged in a December 2020 storm, is halfway funded. Pacific Grove is seeking matching dollars.

The California Coastal Conservancy has awarded $750,000 for the rehabilitation of the Lovers Point Pier in Pacific Grove, part of a $94 million package of grants the conservancy approved on Sept. 17.
The grant covers about half of the estimated $1.5 million repair cost. The pier, a gravity structure more than a century old, was damaged in a December 2020 storm when wave runup dislodged concrete segments from its tip, exposing the vulnerable core of the structure.

Repair plans were approved by the Pacific Grove City Council in October 2023, and the California Coastal Commission granted a Coastal Development Permit waiver in December 2025. The city is now seeking matching funds to cover the rest of the cost.
Rep. Jimmy Panetta has separately requested $1 million in federal funding for the pier repair project for fiscal year 2027.

The pier is one of the most photographed structures on the Peninsula's shoreline, jutting into the bay at the foot of Lovers Point Park. Its restoration would return a working piece of Pacific Grove's waterfront to full use.
