Monterey County residents who want a ballot mailed to them for the Nov. 3 general election have until Monday, Oct. 19, to register to vote, the Monterey County Elections Office said in its deadline notice.

There are three ways to beat the deadline. Register online at RegisterToVote.ca.gov by 11:59 p.m. on Monday. Register in person by 5 p.m. on Monday at the Monterey County Elections Office, 1441 Schilling Place, North Building, in Salinas. Or complete a paper voter registration application and mail it postmarked no later than Monday; paper forms are available at libraries, post offices, DMV locations, and city and county offices.

To register, a voter must be a United States citizen and a California resident, at least 18 years old on or before Election Day, not currently in federal or state prison for the conviction of a felony, and not found mentally incompetent to vote by a court, according to the Elections Office.

Missing Monday does not end the options, but it changes them. From Tuesday, Oct. 20, through Election Day, voters who missed the deadline can register conditionally and cast a provisional ballot in person at any early voting location or at a local polling place. The Salinas Californian's voter guide likewise lists Oct. 20 as the first day of same-day registration.
